چکیده

The flattening of the 10 µm silicate emission feature observed in the spectra of T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars is usually interpreted as an indicator of grain growth. We show in this paper that a similar behaviour of the feature shape occurs when the porosity of composite grains varies. We modelled the fluffy aggregates with inclusions of different sizes with multi-layered spheres consisting of amorphous carbon, amorphous silicate, and vacuum. We also found that the inclusion of crystalline silicates in composite porous particles can lead to a shift of the known resonances and production of new ones.

Size-sorting dust grains in the surface layers of protoplanetary disks

Context: The shape of dust emission features measured from protoplanetary disks contains information about the typical size of the dust particles residing in these disks. A flattened 10 μm silicate feature is often interpreted as proof that grain growth has taken place, while a pointy feature is taken as evidence for the pristine

The absence of the 10 μ m silicate feature in the isolated Herbig Ae star HD 100453

We analyse the optical and IR spectra, as well as the spectral energy distribution (UV to mm) of the candidate Herbig Ae star HD 100453. This star is particular, as it shows an energy distribution similar to that of other isolated Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAEBEs), but unlike most of them, it does not have a silicate emission feature at 10 μm, as is shown in Meeus et al. (2001). We confirm the HAEBE ...

The Composition of Dust in Jupiter-Family Comets Inferred From Infrared Spectroscopy

We review the composition of Jupiter-family comet dust as inferred from infrared spectroscopy. We find that Jupiter-family comets have 10 μm silicate emission features with fluxes roughly 20–25% over the dust continuum (emission strength 1.20–1.25), similar to the weakest silicate features in Oort Cloud comets. We discuss the grain properties that change the silicate emission feature strength (...

On the Anomalous Silicate Emission Features of AGNs: A Possible Interpretation Based on Porous Dust

The recent Spitzer detections of the 9.7μm Si–O silicate emission in type 1 AGNs provide support for the AGN unification scheme. The properties of the silicate dust are of key importance to understanding the physical, chemical and evolutionary properties of the obscuring dusty torus around AGNs. Compared to that of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM), the 10μm silicate emission profile of ty...
